Fortuna Elementary School District
Superintendent’s Report
May 2026
Curriculum and Instruction:
CAASPP testing is currently underway throughout the District. Students in grades 3-8 are participating in the English Language Arts and mathematics assessments, while students in grades 5 and 8 are also completing the California Science Test (CAST). We appreciate the efforts of our students and staff during the testing window and look forward to reviewing the data to help guide future instructional decisions.
For the 2026-2027 school year, the District will continue piloting Amplify Desmos mathematics curriculum materials as we gather additional student outcome data and teacher feedback prior to making a long-term adoption recommendation.
In English Language Arts, the District is currently working toward a decision on piloting new TK-8 instructional materials for next year, as our current curriculum adoptions are outdated. As we continue this work, our goal remains to thoughtfully evaluate high-quality instructional materials that best meet our students' needs and support increased student achievement.
Budget:
There have been no major budget updates since my last report. We continue to work on the LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) update and budget development for the 2026-2027 school year. Once Governor Newsom releases the May Revision, we will have a clearer picture of the state’s financial outlook for the coming year. Jennifer Goodner and Courtney Sousa, our Budget Managers, and I will attend the School Services of California May Revise Workshop on May 21st to support our planning and development process.
FESD’s proposed LCAP and budget will be presented at the Public Hearing on June 9, 2026, with adoption scheduled for the regular Board meeting on June 11, 2026.
The District is currently in the sunshine process with both the Fortuna Elementary Teachers’ Association (FETA) and the California School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapter 889. Negotiation dates for the 2026-2027 school year have not yet been established.
Enrollment for 2026-27:
Enrollment for the 2026-27 school year is now open to new TK-8th-grade students. Families may complete the registration process online at the District website, fortunaesd.com, where enrollment links and additional information are available. Transitional Kindergarten (TK) eligibility applies to children who turn four years old on or before September 1, 2026. Families are encouraged to view the informational video on the District website to learn more about the TK and kindergarten programs at Ambrosini and Walker Schools. Families with children currently enrolled in the District do not need to re-register, as students will be automatically enrolled in the next grade level for the 2026-27 school year. We look forward to welcoming new students and families to our District!
Staff Appreciation:
As we move through the final stretch of the 2025-2026 school year, I would like to recognize and thank our outstanding staff for their continued dedication to our students and schools. Our classified staff, certificated staff, and administrators consistently go above and beyond to support student learning and create positive school environments across the District.
Thank you for the care, professionalism, and commitment you bring to our schools each day! Your hard work is deeply appreciated!
